ephemeral shadow sculptures, 2024
The invitation for public to create their shadows out of what they are drawn to in nature
Shadows are temporary, fleeting creatures that come and go with the sun, while sculptures typically stand the test of time. Shadow Sculptures invites you to become aware of the colours, textures, tones, shapes and forms you are drawn towards in nature. The titular shadow sculptures are ephemeral. They are nature-based immersive and participatory artworks created in various locations by you. Cast your shadow upon the landscape, and fill the shadows with nature’s treasures—leaves, sticks, stones, flowers and more. The works are theatrical, performative and contemplative. As shadow makers you will let go of the preconceived ideas of where and how our treasures can be placed, to make way for harmonious collaboration with nature and the other. Open yourself up to the deep ecology of the sensuous world we are a part of, and let nature be your art materials and canvas.

Gav’s ephemeral shadow sculpture workshop invited the public in Penang to express their inner selves and the ‘unseen’ parts of a shadow through the creation of layered ‘collages’. Leaves, flowers, bark and other natural materials were used to depict each participant’s shadow shape, allowing beautiful sculptures to spring forth from the ground.
